Out Of The Centre

End-of-tour celebration

After our lengthy drive back to Alice, we were treated (and I use the term loosely) to our end-of-trip free meal. For most of us, though, the dodgy pizzas were nothing more than a roadblock in the way of a lengthy night in the hostel bar and dancefloor.

Continuing the tradition that had been set all those nights ago in Blinman, the dj (or the guy who chose which videos to play) in Melankas was flooded with requests for Britney Spears, Steps and the Bee Gees which were danced to with unbridled, heavily-drunken joy.

Rychelle (with gift)

And we couldn't leave without giving Rychelle a present for making our trip so enjoyable - and in true English-male tradition it was a jug filled with alcoholic spirits, with a dash of coke to taste. The rest of the night, for most of the group, is a bit hazy (although I do remember watching Tim Henman lose at Wimbledon on the TV at some ridiculous hour) and ended up with people pairing off all over the place. But I will keep the juicy gossip for myself...

The Plane - to Cairns...

The next day was spent recovering, doing laundry, seeing whether anyone remembered their actions from the night before (if they didn't, I was more than happy to remind them) and planning the next stages of everyone's trip. All done around the pool and under the blazing sun, and turned into a well-needed rest day after the exertions of the past three days.

A short taxi ride to the airport early the next morning signalled an end to an amazingly interesting, enlightening and, more than anything, fun trip - and the beginning of the next leg of my little wander...
